JEEP HORROR is a survival horror game inspired by Filipino folklore and urban legends. You're a jeepney driver working the nite shift. The familiar routes are getting weirder and weirder. The work begins as a very normal profession, picking up passengers, collecting fares, offering change, checking gasoline and delivering each person to his location. The problem is that not every passenger who gets on the transport is human.
Not Normal An Overnight Shift
JEEP HORROR is unlike many driving based horror games in the way it makes the driver's task a survival mechanism. It’s not only about point A to point B. You steer the jeepney into desolate streets, keeping your eyes on the passenger compartment, noting anything that looks wrong.
A traveller may appear quite normal when they initially board. But a deeper glance in the rearview mirror can find an oddity in their reflection or actions. It may be a doppelganger taking the form of a passerby or a monster tied to Philippine horror folklore.
Rearview Mirrors You Can't Forget
Monitoring passengers is more stressful with the limited field of view in the car. Your attention has to be split between what's ahead of you on the road, the condition of your car and what's going on just behind you.
The following decision is critical if you see a suspicious passenger. Allowing that person to stay in the vehicle could put other passengers at risk. However, if an ordinary person is mishandled, it may disturb the smooth flow of the travel.
Out of the City to the Forest Roads
The routes are not confined to metropolitan regions. As the game develops the jeepney may go into dark and empty forest roads where interactions with odd phenomena grow increasingly frequent.
Players also have to cope with:
- Changes in tariffs for passengers.
- Fuel and condition of the jeepney
- Route completion times.
- Strange things happening in the cabin.
- Deciding which passengers to drop off at the next stop.
This mixture of routine activities and otherworldly signs is what makes the gaming rhythm of JEEP HORROR feel so unique. You're still doing your job as a driver, but as the night progresses, distinguishing a normal passenger from something impersonating them becomes increasingly difficult.
JEEP HORROR is still under development, but the idea of combining jeepney driving, Filipino folklore, and anomaly detection mechanics creates a rather different approach to the horror survival genre.
